Diversity’s Impact in Mental Health Care

Join our Anaheim Campus for a virtual event exploring the impact of diversity in mental health care taking place on Wednesday, May 24 from 6 – 7 p.m. PDT. Our clinical psychology faculty, Drs. Parekh and Lopez, will explore systemic patterns of social inequality, examine racism’s impact, and dive deeper into challenges marginalized groups face in gaining access to treatment and care.

Bina Parekh – Associate Department Chair

Dr. Bina Parekh received her M.A. in Community Psychology at New York University and completed her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology and minor emphasis in Biostatistics at Loma Linda University. She served as the Associate Department Chair of the Clinical Psy.D program at the American School of Professional Psychology for 13 years. Currently, she is the Associate Department Chair and Full Professor in the Clinical Psychology program at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology (TCSPP), Anaheim. Dr. Parekh completed a two-year Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Department of Psychiatry at Kaiser Permanente in Milpitas, California specializing in general psychiatry, behavioral medicine, trauma, and chemical dependency. She has served as a project coordinator for several large grants at the Behavioral Health Institute at San Diego State University (SDSU) and acted as a clinical supervisor in the joint doctoral program between SDSU and U.C. San Diego. She has published several peer-reviewed papers in the areas of cross-cultural psychology and behavioral health. Dr. Parekh has worked as a pain psychologist within a multidisciplinary treatment team in the Chronic Pain Program at Kaiser Permanente, Orange. Her clinical focus includes pain management, obesity treatment, biofeedback, trauma, couples counseling, addiction medicine, general psychiatry, and multicultural counseling. Currently, Dr. Parekh is a licensed psychologist and has a private practice specializing in health psychology. Dr. Parekh teaches courses in the areas of research methods, statistics, cognitive behavioral therapy, psychometric theory, diversity, and health psychology.

Beatriz Lopez  – Director of Clinical Training, Clinical PsyD

Tica Lopez, PhD, is the Director of Clinical Training and an Associate Professor in the Clinical PsyD Program at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology (TCSPP), Irvine campus. Prior to starting her position at TCSPP in 2019, Dr. Lopez was the Director of Clinical Training and an Associate Professor at the American School of Professional Psychology, Clinical PsyD program at Argosy University, Orange County campus since 2003. Dr. Lopez holds an undergraduate degree in Psychology from Loyola Marymount University, and she received her Ph.D.in Clinical Psychology at the California School of Professional Psychology (CSPP), Los Angeles campus. Dr. Lopez’s areas of expertise include clinical training of graduate students in psychology and multicultural mental health. Dr. Lopez received a certification as a treatment specialist for diverse populations. In addition, Dr. Lopez maintains a private practice in the city of Fullerton. Dr. Lopez is a licensed psychologist in the state of California. Dr. Lopez’s main areas of interest include multicultural mental health, clinical training of graduate students, and adult treatment of trauma.
