- 3 terms
Students in the Social and Community Psychology Certificate program will gain a theoretical and experiential foundation in multicultural psychology. Students will explore the social construction and impact of culture, gender, ethnicity, religion, spirituality, class, race, ableness, and immigrant status. Additionally, dimensions of acculturation and the interrelationship between gender and psychology across different cultures will be analyzed.
The Social and Community Psychology Certificate program is taught entirely in Spanish. The aim of the program is to prepare students for a career that involves working with diverse populations to improve mental health, optimize performance, and modify problematic behaviors. Students have the option to complete the program and apply the courses toward the Master of Arts in Psychology degree.
Key Program Differentiators
The course shell, required textbooks and readings, postings, and deliverables are in Spanish. Students must be fluent in Spanish and be prepared to communicate in Spanish with their instructors and peers.
The Social and Community Psychology Certificate program aligns with The Chicago School of Professional Psychology’s commitment of cultural competency in service delivery. A lack of cultural competence may lead service providers to misunderstand and misdiagnose members of the Hispanic and Latinx community. A provider who understands acculturation can play a role in mental health and access to care. Acculturation has been found to predict use of healthcare services with a higher level of acculturation resulting in higher utilization (source: National Alliance on Mental Illness).
The Chicago School has in place multiple articulation agreements and memorandums of understanding (MOU) in Costa Rica, Peru, and Mexico. New relationships are also being developed in Spain, Argentina, and Columbia. The articulation agreements and MOUs support our Spanish partnerships through the concentration in community and social psychology program offered in the Master of Arts in Psychology curriculum, which is taught entirely in Spanish. The certificate in social and community psychology program provides prospective international students an additional option for a credential and creates a safer entry point into the full master’s program.
